Going Green Print E-mail

Going GreenThe Information Technology (IT) sector has a great impact on our environment. In fact, one web server alone has roughly the same climate impact as a 15mpg sport utility vehicle. Somewhere between 3 and 4 percent of all electricity (and the associated carbon emissions) used in the world goes to the operation of data centers. Despite what many governments and emerging societies want to believe, climate change is real and is happening now.  Our planet desperately needs to reduce IT emissions, as well as other harmful emissions, if a clean and healthy environment is what we hope to leave behind for our children.

Our company is proud to announce that our web server operations have joined the ranks of progressive companies such as IBM, UPS, and Starbucks in helping to take action for the betterment of our environment.  While the climate impact of our operations are significantly less than the aforementioned corporations, it never-the-less requires strong leadership and responsibility to understand progress must be made on all levels.

About our Green Web Server Operations:

All of our web hosting servers take advantage of renewable energy to both power and cool their systems. A number of "green" web hosts use only renewable energy to power their servers. Web servers dissipate a large amount of heat; in fact, for every watt of electricity a web server uses, roughly 1-2 watts are required to cool it. That means our hosting operations utilize about twice the amount of renewable energy than most "green" hosts.

What can you do to minimize your environmental impact?

Well, for one you can switch your web hosting services to WebCitz. Beyond that, there are numerous other ways to go green in your personal life. Most of them are totally painless; for example, turning off your computer at night, unplugging phone chargers from the wall when not in use, and shutting off unnecessary lights before leaving the office. For an even greater impact, you could consider switching to compact fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs. For more energy-saving ideas, check out http://www.carbontracker.com/ or http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/wycd/index.html.
